So I tend to drive like an ass and I almost had to pay for it yesterday.
It had snowed the night before and there was about two inchs of snow on the ground. So I came around a corner in a 4 wheel skid, but I let off too long, got too sideways and panicked. I probably could have got back on the gas, countered, and saved it, but there were cars parked further down on the other side of the road, and I didn’t want to over correct and end up hitting one of them. So instead I accepted my fate drove over the curb and up a three foot hill after that. Thankfully my car is taller than the curb, my bumper pushed into the dirt a bit up the hill, there’s still some grass in the fog light. But my bumper didn’t get damaged. Also I let off the brake and steered straight onto the curb so it just rolled right up it, rather than then smacking it side ways, with a locked wheel(old ABS doesn’t always do it’s job). I backed up off the hill and drove on to work. Thankfully, with nothing but my pride damaged. I was the first timed I’d panicked like that in my Galant, but It was a good reminder that I am not David Higgins, or even Ken Block.

No other cars involved - whew.
And if no one saw it, how do we know it happened? I didn’t see a thing ....

Glad to hear you and your car are unscathed. I had a similar incident years ago and was not so lucky. In VT in my brand new 05' WRX I was flying around a turn (like an asshole)...”ooo I’ve got AWD I can do anything” on a day when it had snowed but the roads had been plowed. I started to slide a little in the middle of the turn...no problem, until I see a mound of plowed snow piled up on the double yellows. I hit that pile with my rear wheels, now I was
really
sliding!
I probably still could have saved it but there was a car barreling down the hill that I was facing in the opposing lane (which I was in a little bit) and on the far side of that lane was a guard railless cliff 50ft or so down. On the right hand side was a ditch against a jagged rock wall. So I made the quickest decision I have ever made in my life...Cliff? Truck? Wall?...Wall it is.
After all that I had to sit in the back of a police cruiser for an hour while he tired to get me to admit to speeding. I finally said, “I just wrecked my brand new car, we can sit here all day but I’m not going to admit to speeding.”
11k in damage, one month old. Been a while since I’ve looked at these.

Ouch. Now that’s a lesson learnt the hard way.
I still have yet to have a reckless mistake leave mine or any one else’s car scared. Wosrt I’ve done is a cracked bumper that heppedn while pulling my old Camry out of a snow bank, but the crack was so low you could even see it unless you were on your knees, but I tend to keep my speeds down. I was probably only doing 30-35 mph when this happened. but on a tight 25 mph road covered in snow that’s still not smart.

Sometimes ya gotta learn the hard way haha. I can’t believe that was more than 10 years ago now. I got in more trouble in that WRX and the STi that came after it than I have in all of the other cars I have ever owned combined. Their should be an age restriction on those cars.

When I was 19 I slid my Celica around a corner onto black ice and immediately locked all four wheels. The car slid into a snow bank at maybe 10mph, made some crunching noises and stalled. The car stereo was still blaring “Highway Star” by Deep Purple, which really is the last song you want playing when you buried your car in the snow so deep one of the rear wheels is in the air.
I dug the car out and was able to back it out with the help of a local good samaritan who had a bag of sand. Just my luck, the car was completely undamaged, the snow was soft enough and the bumper cover was faded enough to mask any potential scratches. I finished the drive home and parked the car, not saying anything to my parents. When my Dad got home he almost immediately said to me “learn something about your tires when you slid into that snow bank?” I tried to play dumb, but he cut me off. “The front air dam is full of snow, it’s pretty obvious what happened. By the way, go clear that out or you’ll overheat the car.”

Dads can be really cool sometimes. My Dad was like that. He knew what I was up too, because he did the same stupid stuff when he was a kid, he never acted like I was stupid or a disappointment, he just told meto use the sense I had and not tell my mom anything cuz she’d worry.

Yeah, my Dad started modding VW bugs in college and continued modding VWs until he had a Type 3 fastback that was so unreliable he gave up on the brand. After that, he bought a Saab Sonnett, and actually met my Mom because they commiserated over their Saabs. Last car he had before having kids was a Chrysler Conquest, a relatively rare narrow-body turbo car. He got rid of that for the Celica after the turbo blew a second time and the overboost cracked one of the passages in the block (he told me it cracked the wall between cylinders 2 and 3 but that would take a lot of work and I wasn’t around to verify it).

Glad to hear you’re alright and the car too! It seems like everyone’s sharing their story so I will too.
A couple years ago I got a Buick Regal GS from the rental fleet for a trip up to Quebec City. I was actually pleasantly surprised at what it could do and up in Quebec City, there was endless ice, it was snowing and it was -58F outside. Trying to get to the winter carnival and after having some fun with the car, I pulled on a two way road that had a bit of a traffic jam and wanted to show off.
Anyways, I began the powerslide turn left and had all safety’s off (T/C, ESC). Note the otherisde of the road had a 5 foot tall wall of ice... I had the slide going fantastic, my sister screaming in the seat and right as I give it all the throttle to go forwards it keeps rotating. I keep giving it throttle and BAM it goes forward but I feel it... it scrapped the ice wall. It only left a 1/16 of an inch thick pinstripe that didn’t even break through the primer along most of the car.

That a pretty cool list of cars. My Dad had a lime green 78 Volvo 240 coupe that is the reason my parents ended up together. My Mom saw it in the parking lot, and started asking around about who own that cool new, lime green, European car.

Nice. I still send my Mom photos of every Saab 96 that shows up on BaT, maybe eventually I’ll be able to keep a project in my parents’ garage if it’s a Saab, haha.

If my Mom lived close by I could probably fit a Volvo, or Jag project in there garage. Volvos are pretty important to my family, but a green Jag XJ is my Mom’s all time dream car. Also that same car that got my parents together saved my dad from teenage stupidity. A year after highschool he was racing his now brother in law, on a dirt road and over cooked it around a corner, He wrapped it around a tree on the driver’s side and walked away. So yeah if it wasn’t for Volvo I wouldn’t exist because my Dad probably would have died in 1980.
